Spring has Sprung – In February?!?!

It sure feels like Spring around here at Sun Bulb Company, Inc. We are super busy gearing up for what should be a great season of repotting for all of our orchid enthusiasts around the country. We are busy getting your retailers’shelves filled with high quality mixes and mosses- like Better-Gro® Special Orchid Mix, Better-Gro® Phalaenopsis Mix, Better-Gro® Dendrobium Mix, Better-Gro® Orchid Bark, Better-Gro® Orchid Moss and Better-Gro® Sphagnum Moss- for you to repot your orchids.

We have found that many individuals may have received a blooming orchid as a holiday gift, and the plant is about ready to stop blooming. That makes now the best time to stock up on your orchid repotting supplies! The best time to repot an orchid is right after it is done with its blooming cycle. Make sure to grab some mix!

Check out this photo! We have been so busy gearing up for the season that we had to expand our working area outside of our Warehouses! These racks of orchid supplies were waiting for a truck to pick them up to ship them to a local Lowe’s Home Improvement store near you!

Instructions for Use:

Place the water-saving saucer in the inside bottom of the liner of the basket. Place the plant and soil directly into the Coconest basket. Hang your new arrangement in natural Coconest from your favorite spot. You may also want to combine with the Better-Gro® Packaged Supplies like the S-hooks to extend the hook and increase the number of areas you may hang and display your new basket. If you choose to water and use your Better-Gro® Coconest Petal Baskets indoors, use a drip pan to catch any excess water.

New Product: Better-Gro Self-Watering Orchid™

Do you love the elegance of orchids but are scared of the mess they might make in the elegant places you want to put them? No need to worry- Sun Bulb Company, Inc. has come up with the answer… the Self-Watering Orchid™. Now you can place your orchid on your most delicate surfaces. Wouldn’t a bright Phalaenopsis look great on your piano?

Self-Watering Orchids™ allow you to have the convenience of an artificial plant, but with the benefits of a real, living plant! Live plants release an earthy, natural smell that is pleasing to the senses. Real plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere and improve air quality. Real plants can also elevate the humidity a bit, which is healthy in environments like offices where air conditioners produced stale, forced air. Some of the materials often used to make artificial plants can release toxic materials into the air. Personally, I would prefer oxygen to toxic materials.

Real orchids are also often safer for your pets. Pets sometimes have a tendency to chew on plants, whether artificial or real. Artificial orchid plants may have toxic components that can be harmful to your pets, real orchids will not harm them.

You might be thinking, “But it’s living, that means I am going to kill it,” but Self-Watering Orchids™ make it so easy that you can have confidence that you will get to enjoy the orchid for years. Orchids are easy to grow because they enjoy living where you live. Self-Watering Orchids™ make it simple because other than enjoying their beauty all you need to do is add about 1 cup of water to the plant every 2 weeks.

Look for them today in your local Lowes Home Improvement store, or use our zip code locator to find the location closest to you

AOS selects Robert Palmer as "The Best Orchid Grower I Know"

Robert Palmer, our Head Grower, was chosen as the American Orchid Society’s “The Best Orchid Grower I Know” in the January issue of “Orchid” magazine, a monthly publication put out by the organization. Palmer was honored with a 9-page article which highlighted several of his accomplishments in his 32 years with Sun Bulb Company.

Legendary among Orchid Growers, Robert Palmer cares for millions of orchids at Sun Bulb Company. Palmer gained an affection for orchids at an early age when he worked at Sun Bulb Company as a summer job during high school. He enjoyed the work so much that he majored in Ornamental Horticulture at the University of Florida and came back to work at Sun Bulb Company upon graduation.

Palmer’s background in plant nutrition and frustration from dealing with unsatisfactory fertilizers at Sun Bulb lead him to develop his own. Palmer’s formulations worked so well in our Sun Bulb greenhouses and at home with his own plants that they have now been branded and sold as Better-Gro Orchid Plus® and Better-Gro Bloom Booster®. When asked why he decided to sell his formulation, Palmer responded, “We wanted to provide hobbyists with a low-cost fertilizer that was exactly what the professional growers use.”

Orchids grown by Palmer can be purchased at garden centers marketed under the Better-Gro® brand. Some of his favorite varieties are the Vanda and the Cattleya. Both of which can be purchased in Blooming Size packaged varieties and hobbyists can enjoy watching their plants grow at home just as “The Best Orchid Grower I Know” does every morning when he steps into the greenhouses in Arcadia.

You can read the whole article about Robert Palmer in the January issue of “Orchids” magazine published by the American Orchid Society.

American Orchid Society Announces Partnership with Sun Bulb Company, Inc.

Delray Beach, FL — October 5, 2006 The American Orchid Society (AOS) is pleased to announce a new partnership with one of the premier orchid firms in the nation. Sun Bulb Company Inc., headquartered in Arcadia, Florida, has been growing and distributing orchids and BETTER-GRO orchid supplies for more than 50 years. Throughout this half-century, Sun Bulb has tested and developed some of the most effective potting mediums and fertilizers for growing different types of orchids, and the AOS is proud to offer its endorsement of Better-Gro potting mixes and fertilizers.

“Over 85 years, the AOS name has come to mean quality instructive offerings and superb member and customer service,” states Art Moore, the Society’s President. “We take very seriously consideration of lending our good name to products, and we’re delighted and confident that partnering with Sun Bulb in this venture will superbly compliment not only the AOS’s educational mission, but also greatly enhance the opportunity to put solid products in the hands of orchid growers across the country.”

“The BETTER-GRO family is thrilled to partner with the AOS in this venture,” states Tom Hollingsworth, President of Sun Bulb Co. “Our Better-Gro mixes and fertilizer formulations are used by home gardeners as well as our orchid growers in our nurseries and are proven successful and effective. Teaming with a world-class educational organization such as the AOS is a natural alliance for Sun Bulb’s Better-Gro orchid supplies and we’re excited about this opportunity.”

The AOS logo and Web site contact information will appear on the following BETTER-GRO products: 4 and 8 quart special orchid mixes; 8 quart phalaenopsis mix; 8 quart orchid bark; 1/8 BU. vanda mix; orchid moss; 1 pound orchid plus fertilizer; and 1 pound orchid plus bloom booster. The AOS will disseminate information concerning the endorsed Sun Bulb products through various communication vehicles at the organization’s disposal, including its award-winning Orchids magazine and its popular Web site (www.aos.org), as well as offer Sun Bulb’s products through its headquarters in Delray Beach, Florida — the AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden.

Sun Bulb Company was founded by AP and Mildred Hollingsworth 1956. Over the years, this third-generation family business has grown with the orchid industry, distributing Better-Gro garden products throughout North and South America. These products are found at major garden retailers and independent garden centers — see www.better-gro.com for a retail outlet in your area.

The American Orchid Society, founded in 1921, is the largest special-interest horticultural organization in the world. The nonprofit organization’s goals are to extend the knowledge, production, preservation, use and appreciation of orchids. The AOS Web site — the one-stop e-shop for quality orchid information — receives more than 3 million hits per month, making it the #1 Internet site for orchids (Google keyword “orchids”). The AOS is the premier authority for orchids for all matter of audiences (governments, the horticultural and orchid industries, affiliated societies, the national and international media, etc.). The AOS has more than 400 affiliated orchid societies and organizations around the world to which the organization is a reliable and constant source of information.
