As part of our continuing effort to leave the world better than we found it, Sun Bulb Company, Inc. is now partnering with a local citrus grower to compost urban plant debris (CUPD). Composting is nature’s way of recycling and is a key factor for sustainability.
Here’s how it works:
Citrus growers farm their land every year. Over time, the turning of the crop depletes the nutrients in the soil. So, we drop off our plant waste – plant waste that is full of fertilizer from our well-tended plants.
The citrus grower uses this plant waste as a major component in his compost mix.
What makes this compost mix so great?
Microbes (a beneficial soil bacteria) in our plant waste re-nourish the old crop soil – they infuse the soil with more beneficial microbes. These microbes break down the fertilizer and nutrients stored in our plant waste and turn it in to a “natural fertilizer” that the citrus crop can digest and use for healthy growth.
These types of sustainable processes reduce landfill waste while providing valuable nutrients to Florida’s symbolic crops.
